Beauty and Your Mouth

By Devon Monache

It smiles, laughs, sings, speaks words of love, and puckers for a kiss. Unfortunately, all these activities take a toll over the years.

The first place most women begin to see lines and wrinkles is near their mouth. The skin here moves as much as any skin on the face, bending and folding as we exploit its many uses. Sunblock, visors and hats help, however the lower portion of the face usually still suffers greater damage from the sun. Put these factors together and eventually you get wrinkles.

It is unfortunate that, when someone looks at you, they first notice your mouth and eyes. Bright lipstick brings even more awareness to the mouth area, making those tiny wrinkles seem worse. Most people find that the changes radiate from the mouth toward the cheeks and chin, and as collagen is lost, the jawline becomes soft and saggy.

That's the bad news. Fortunately, there are some things to do about it.

In the past, fewer tools were available to fix facial flaws. Surgery such as a face lift can't change the quality of skin around the mouth, often leaving this area wrinkled in glaring contrast to an otherwise taut face after a well done procedure. Botox in small quantities can help reduce aggressive lip pursing, but can't treat etched in lines and wrinkles.

Collagen production decreases when we get older. Years of damage from the sun and other factors add up, and the collagen breakdown process happens even faster. So, we get wrinkly, lined skin in the end. Voluminous lips become a thing of the past. Reducing sun damage, hydrating and nourishing our bodies, supplementing with omega-3s and antioxidants are all a start. Luckily, small quantities of filler bring back shape, and soften small wrinkles.

Research has now suggested that fuller lips may have as much to do with a woman's perceived age as the appearance of wrinkles. Once we reach our mid-30s, the volume of the lips declines gradually. Many clients ask how they can have full, natural lips without too much maintenance.

An experienced injector will add filler gradually, giving the mouth a natural, full look. We want to avoid unattractive 'platypus lips'.

The biggest problem at times, is knowing what your limits are. If you have small lips, you can only enhance them to a degree.

There is more to this than just filling lines around the mouth though. There is a fine balance in the relationship between the face and the mouth. It's important to have an injector who considers this artistically and knows about the anatomy of the face. Locating an artful and talented injector, who is also experienced, is paramount.
