Introduction To Legal Paternity Testing

By Lora Jones

There are many reasons why people want to undergo legal paternity testing. Some want to confirm who their real father is while others just want to get rid of the doubt and confusion. Whatever the reason, the results can make a lot of difference.

The test is done by taking dna samples from both parent and child. DNA or deoxyribonucleic acid is unique and contains genetic information. If there are enough markers between the two samples, then they can be considered a match and in effect, the male is indeed the father. The test is supposed to be highly accurate.

There are kits available so you can obtain samples. Once you have a sample, this can be sent to the facility that will do the processing. Kits are not costly but then you will still have to pay the facility for doing the test. You may want to check on several facilities first so you can find something that is affordable.

The test can be done casually, such as when you just want to confirm the parentage of the child. However, when the results are to be used for legal transactions, then the test will be much more expensive. The procedure for the test will also be different since there are measures to be followed to ensure that the samples are not tampered with.

Since the test will be scrutinized in court and paperwork will have to be provided, it will be more costly. This does not mean however that home tests will have less accuracy. The laboratory will treat the samples in the same manner.

There are many circumstances that can induce the need for an official test. An adoption for example may have to get this confirmation. If you stand to inherit some properties and there is still some doubt about who your father is, then the test may be required.

When a test has to be admissible in court, then an authorized party should be present for collection. The individuals involved will have to provide proof that they are indeed the persons that are to be tested. The facility will need premium equipment and skilled personnel to ensure that nothing goes wrong during the processing of the samples.

The test can be done in either at home or at the facility and stricter measures will be enforced. It can take two days or more to get the results, depending on the center you have chosen. Considerations have to be made if for example the child and the supposed father are not living in the same area. The schedule for taking those samples will also be up to you.

Legal paternity testing provides confirmation regarding the identity of the biological father. The test is considered accurate since dna, which is unique to every person, will be used for the process. You can use this to put those doubts to rest or you can utilize the results for legal purposes.
